New Post: MCEBuddy crashes my machine

  1. I've done several CPU and GPU stress tests with NO ISSUE. Carefully monitored CPU, GPU and mobo temps. everything was well below max.
  2. I've done several memory stress tests including the Windows memtest and memtest86. There is nothing wrong with my RAM.
  3. Seems to be somewhat random, but my PC crashes when rendering with MCEBuddy. I've tried it with the ATI HD7870 and with it removed using the Intel HD4600. Crashed both times.
  4. As soon as I remove MCEBuddy, I can convert, render, watch video all day long with no issues. Plus for years I've NEVER had crashes until I installed MCEBuddy.
Draw your own conclusions. I have. I may try MCEBuddy on my laptop at a future time, but for now, MCEBuddy will not be installed on my desktop.

Im running windows 7 and the latest beta version but I have tried other versions including non beta. When ever I try to launch the software I get the error:

The MCEBUDDY service is unavailiable, Please start from windows control panel or check engine connection.

I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling and also do not have any commercial skipp software installed.

One thing I found is that if I set the service to manual, then reboot the computer then go to the mcebuddy folder and rmb on "MCEBuddy.ServiceCMD" and run as administrator it does start and run properly.

To add a little more my showed are not getting deleted after there converted, even though I have checked the box to delete the originals after conversion on the main settings page. The log shows it moving but no where does it say that it's trying to delete it and there are no errors.

Commented Unassigned: Xbox Extender won't play Conversions from ABC [2843]

So I've done as much troubleshooting as I can, but I am stumped.

TV shows recorded on the ABC channel Honolulu (KITV) when converted by MCEBuddy stutter when trying to play them on an Xbox 360 Extender.

I moved to Honolulu recently and did a clean install of my HTPC. My host HTPC that the Xbox Extenders connect to is an i3-2100 on a Z68 Gigabyte MoBo running Windows 7 Home Premium using Intel integrated graphics (no GPU). This is also the PC MCEBuddy resides on. The post MCEBuddy converted shows play fine on the host PC via WMP or Emby for WMC, they play fine on my Mac, and they play fine on my iPads via the Emby iOS app. However, they stutter continuously when trying to play them through WMC on the Xbox Extenders.

I've narrowed it down to only shows on ABC. Shows converted by MCEBuddy for NBC and Fox play fine.

It is not the specific Xbox, because both my Xbox 360s have this problem.

I thought it was MCEBuddy 2.4.2, so I tried the 11/20/15 build of 2.4.3 but it still happened, so I reverted to a version of 2.4.1 from before I moved that had always worked fine and it still happened.

I use a modified profile of the HQ MP4 profile where I also add in a AC3 audio track (H.264/AAC 2-ch/AC3 6-ch). So I reverted to the default HQ MP4 profile but it still did it. So I tried the HQ MKV profile and it still did it. I also tried the Fast MP4 profile, still stutters.

I unchecked hardware encoding and it still did it. I also made sure I had the most up-to-date Intel Graphics drivers. Still did it.

I unchecked 'detect and optimize video quality' but still did it.

I unchecked 'multichannel audio' but still stutters.

I thought maybe the beginning of the wtv files were corrupted, so I changed the 'start at' parameter of all profiles from 3 seconds to 60 seconds, but the converted files still stutter on the Xbox's.

I use the latest donator version of comskip and a custom comskip.ini.

I've uploaded the conversion logs for Modern Family and Agents of SHIELD (ABC shows) as well as the first 100,000 KB chunk of one of the original Modern Family wtv files (split using File Splitter from MCEBuddy ftp site), to a folder on the MCEBuddy ftp site called UPLOADS\ABC Shows.

If anyone else has a similar setup or uses MCEBuddy and Xbox extenders, can you try and convert the wtv file and see if the resultant mp4 or mkv play fine on your PC but stutters on the Xbox extenders?

This is driving me crazy!

Same with new build.

It's something with the channel. I had the cable company come out and they said the power amplifier on the line was bad and replaced it. It's weird it is just this one channel (ABC). Maybe handbrake is ultra sensitive to bad recording. I'll troubleshoot with encoder and ffmpeg and see if it still has the same result. Recordings from CBS and FOX are fine.

The way I understand it NVENC replaces CUDA.
Just installed the 12/17 build on my laptop. Asus ROG G751JL, i7 4720HQ, 16GB, NVidia GTX965M, 500GBSSD and 1TB HHD
GPUZ shows that MCEbuddy uses the GPU but only 8-9%

New Post: Handbrake Random Hangs

About one out of every 15 or so conversions hangs Handbrake. When I have a hung file, I will attempt to reprocess and it will always hang but not necessarily in the same spot (sometimes it will hang sooner, sometimes later in the conversion). If I switch from the standard Convert to MP4 (w/Comskip) to a conversion without comskip, the process completes successfully.

Log File: http://m.uploadedit.com/ba3n/1450536165933.txt

Setup - OTA recording via HDHomeRun Connect into WMC. MCEBuddy 2.4.2, latest donator version of Comskip. Computer is a Lenovo Think Server TS-140 (w/8GB of ECC memory)

Is there an option I am overlooking that would resolve this issue? I searched the forums but didn't come across anyone else mentioning a similar situation.

Is it possible to have MCEBuddy cancel a conversion after a set period of time? If so, could I have MCEBuddy requeue a file using a different profile (ie try converting w/comskip but if it fails after an hour, just do a straight MP4/H.264 encoding without comskip)?

Thanks for any help on this ... everything has been running great except for these occasional hangups during encoding.

This has been answered in the hardware encoding FAQ. It hangs because you have an unstable Intel driver and you're using hardware encoding. Use one of the recommended intel driver versions and also update to the latest 2.4.3 beta. It has a timeout for detecting hung conversions (about 30 minutes) and then falls back to software encoding.

New Post: Use MCEBuddy to Rename WTV files

I would like to use MCEBuddy to automatically rename WTV files. I don't need it to create a new file. I just want it to rename an existing file. I like using the custom file renaming feature to rename WTV files using metadata in those files.

I'm currently trying to do this using the WTV Unprocessed profile and I've clicked the "Rename and sort files only," checkbox. However, this creates a duplicate file. My system bogs down a bunch while it is creating this duplicate file and it takes a while to do so. I believe this is mostly due to the input/output bottleneck on my 2TB Western Digital Green drive.

Yes as a safety measure MCEBuddy always creates a new file and leaves the original intact.

In Conversion Task -> Expert Settings there is an option, Skip copying original file, which will end up working on the original file without creating a copy and is your answer.

I'm not seeing that option.

I'm using version 2.3 Release 13. Does it exist in that version? If so, would you please be so kind as to include a screenshot?

New Post: Early Access Program?

The title Early Access Program implies that you are paying for early access to the latest version of MCEBuddy, but eventually these newer versions will be available to people who aren't a part of the Early Access Program.

Version 2.3.14 came out on November 19th, 2013 (over two years ago). Since then none of the other versions have been made available except through the Early Access Program.

I understand that MCEBuddy is a great product and that considerable time and effort has been put into it. I have no problem with money being earned from it. However, if all future versions of MCEBuddy are going to be paid perhaps the Early Access Program should be renamed.

Will any versions beyond 2.3.14 be freely available for download?

New Post: WTV Unprocessed Comskip conversion tasks

Hello,

New user here of early access 2.4.3 Beta 20151217 64-bit build on Win 7 SP1.
I'm running Windows Media Center to record shows (WTV format) that I just want to strip the commercials from with no further processing.
I have a set of existing WTV recordings in 3 places that I have in the Monitoring list. I want to use the "WTV Unprocessed" profile only on my commercial TV shows (not PBS shows). So I am trying to use Selection Filters - Filename match.

What I expected: after setting up a WTV Unprocessed conversion task with a filename filter such as "The Tonight*;The Late*;Dateline*"...and then pressing Start, I expected the file conversion queue to populate with all of my files that meet this criteria. Instead, the status stays at Idle.

So I created multiple conversion tasks, each one with a single filename with wildcard. Same result.

Maybe I'm missing something on how to tell MCEBuddy to go populate my conversion tasks. Or, does it only create a new conversion task after a NEW file comes into the monitor locations?

Thank you for a very useful program and any support or ideas on this.

Just in the process of setting this up the first time and having some trouble getting the captions synced properly. I'm not using the commercial skip functionality, but I have instructed it to burn the subtitles into the video (as some of my DLNA devices don't pull down SRT files). The captions in the WTV files played back in media center are perfectly synced, but the converted videos seem to miss a few seconds of video (ie the converted files seem to start at about 5 seconds into the WTV version) so I'm guessing that is the source of the problem?

I'm currently waiting for it to reprocess an episode with the subtitle offset manually dialled in, but I'd like a better understanding of what is happening here? Specifically, is the underlying cause deterministic and this is a set it once and it always works thing, or is this going to need adjustment on a regular basis. Additionally, is there anything I can change in the profile settings to avoid it cutting off those first few seconds?

For reference, the system is running Win 7 with Media Center feeding from a HD Home Run tuner and Plex serving video to various devices. Other than adding the option to burn in the captions I'm using MP4 Normal profile. As far as options, I've disabled comskip, instructed it to capture the captions and changed the max width to 1280. Otherwise, settings are all default.

Attach a link to your mcebuddy.log file or go through it. It will tell you why it isn't adding the files to the queue. Maybe the filters don't match or there is a delay timer or the files are inaccessible.

What version of McEBuddy are you using?

The possible reason is a mismatch between the profile skip and GOP boundary lines. Let me explain

The profiles are setup to skip the first few seconds of the file (for stability). These are indicated by the -ss 3 for ffmpeg profiles and similarly for other encoders.
To compensate the default subtitle offset is set to 3 seconds so it'll be in sync.

However in realty even if you tell ffmpeg to skip 3 seconds. It doesn't exactly cut 3 seconds but rather along the GOP boundary line which can be +- 5 seconds depending upon the profile parameters. Hence it is never exact.

The answer is set the subtitle offset to 0 and remove the initial skip seconds from the profile and also from the remux profile in mcebuddy.conf. If you have good quality video recordings you don't need to skip initial seconds in the profile or the remux section (this was put in to manage bad quality recordings).

Hope this helps understand how it works.

Thanks for the quick response. I did have the Intel drivers as referenced on the FAQ but still had the occasional hang (sorry for not putting in my original post). I'll give the 2.4.3 beta a go .. the timeout feature for hung conversions sounds like it is a nice compromise for those occasional hardware encoding hangups.
