I have installed various codecs, including the FFDShow, but the problem persists.
Thoughts?

So there are 2 parts to this problem:
1. Which encoder are you using to create the mp4 file? Handbrake, ffmpeg or mencoder? Each is a little different. Try using handbrake followed by ffmpeg. You will need to change the order in the profile to change the encoder.
2. From what I see its possible that the codecs you have installed are creating the problem. MCE uses its own decoders from the media foundation framework to decode video files (wmp does not). Sometimes installing 3rd party codecs can damage the windows media foundation settings or registry which will cause mce to stop working. The solution here is to restore windows media foundation codecs. Use this tool Win7DSFilterTweaker. Use this to reset and reenable the default windows media foundation settings and also restore the default Microsoft codecs priority. That should solve your problem.
This isn't a mce buddy issue (it works fine with mce) but rather a codec incompatibility issue with mce and windows media foundation.
